JOÃO VIEIRA AND ELENA LASHMANOVA WON IN RIO MAIOR

The Portuguese João Vieira and the Olympic Gold Medal in London 2012 Elena Lashmanova won the 22nd Race Walking International Grand Prix in Rio Maior, an event that integrates the European Athletics Association calendar and the 11st Challenge of IAAF - International Association of Athletics Federation.

On Saturday April 6, the competition took place on the main streets of the city, once again with many athletes and a great public supporting the race walkers.

In women´s 20 Kms, the podium was completed with Mirna Ortiz from Guatemala and the Portuguese Ana Cabecinha. The local athletes Inês Henriques and Vera Santos were 4th and 9th classified.

In men, followed by João Vieira, were his brother Sergio Vieira and the Mexican Diego Flores finished 3rd, while Pedro Isidro was 7th classified.

In the junior category, there were two local athletes that stood out, Mara Ribeiro was 1st classified and Miguel Carvalho who competed in the 20 Kms race, making an excellent time, ensuring the qualification for the European Championship.

Throughout the day the World Health Day was held in the City Garden providing sports and leisure activities which had a great public participation.

This event was organized by the Municipality of Rio Maior, the Rio Maior Sports Centre and the Rio Maior Swimming Club, with the support from many other international and national companies.
