1. Training Camps

In July, the Rio Maior Sports Centre welcomed 832 athletes for training camps, representing 9 sports disciplines and coming from 25 countries.

Highlights of the month:

• The first half of July was marked by the presence of several football teams, including the U-17 team of Clube Recreativo Desportivo Arrudense and the senior teams of AD Marco 09, CCD Olivais Sul and Lusitano Ginásio Clube de Évora.

• From 6 to 13 July, the Rio Maior Sports Centre welcomed another international football academy, this time NF Academy, with a group of 34 young athletes from several European countries, for an intensive week of preparation.

• Clube Olímpico de Oeiras chose Rio Maior for a triathlon training camp, held from 15 to 19 July, involving junior and elite athletes.

• Also from 15 to 19 July, training camps for the Modern Pentathlon National Teams took place in Rio Maior, continuing the work developed within the Modern Pentathlon Training and Performance Centre, inaugurated at the end of 2025 and designed to host national and international training programmes, camps and competitions.

• The Portugal U-18 Men's National Basketball Team held a training camp from 20 to 22 July, in preparation for the European Championship.

• From 24 to 26 July, Rio Maior welcomed a group of developing triathletes coached by Olympic athletes João Pereira and Miguel Arraiolos, in a training camp focused on the technical and competitive development of the sport.

• The month ended with another training camp organised by YMAA Portugal, dedicated to martial arts. The sessions took place at the Multi-Sports and Gymnastics Pavilions and continued into the beginning of August.

2. Events

July was also marked by several sporting and educational events, particularly in basketball, modern pentathlon and swimming.

• On 4 July, the Modern Pentathlon Training and Performance Centre hosted a Continuing Education Session for Coaches, led by Nuno Frazão and Filipe Frazão. The session took place in the auditorium of the Rio Maior Business and Innovation Centre and was based on a book authored by Nuno Frazão, promoting the sharing of experience and knowledge among participants.

• On 7 July, Rio Maior hosted the 1st National Military Modern Pentathlon Championship, in the Obstacle Laser Run discipline. The competition brought together 55 athletes, representing the different branches of the Armed Forces and Security Forces.

• The Rio Maior Olympic Swimming Pool hosted the Summer District Championships for Infants, Youth and Seniors on 10, 11 and 12 July, organised by the Santarém District Swimming Association.

• On 24, 25 and 26 July, the Multi-Sports Pavilion hosted an international preparation tournament between the U-16 Men's National Basketball Teams of Portugal, Hungary, Finland and Belgium.

• During the summer, the Rio Maior Sports Centre was once again chosen by MVP Academy to host a training camp. From 19 July to 1 August, young athletes from various parts of Portugal took part in an intensive basketball camp, featuring training sessions and individual development programmes.

3. Three Rio Maior Swimming School Athletes Contribute to Portugal's Best-Ever Performance

The Portugal Junior National Lifesaving Team achieved Portugal's best-ever performance at a European Championship, held in Rome, Italy, from 27 to 29 July.

The Portuguese team finished the competition in 9th place in the overall team standings, with 91.75 points, representing a historic result for the sport.

Among the athletes selected for the national team were Leonor Luís, Maria Rodrigues and Simão Aires, athletes from the Rio Maior Swimming School, who contributed to this excellent international performance.

Desmor congratulates the entire Portuguese delegation on the result achieved and extends special recognition to its three athletes, who continue to showcase the work carried out at the Rio Maior Swimming School and to represent the municipality at the highest level.
