11ST MAY - RIO MAIOR INTERNATIONAL RACE WALKING GRAND PRIX

Yesterday, on May 9th, the presentation of the 31st Edition of the International Grand Prix of Rio Maior in Race Walking and the 39th Edition of the National Road Race Walking Championship took place at the Albino Maria Auditorium of the Rio Maior Training Center. The event will take place tomorrow (May 11th) in the central streets of the city.

The International Grand Prix of Rio Maior in Race Walking is categorized as a Gold Level RW Event, integrated into the World Race Walking Tour of World Athletics. This year's competition includes the 39th National Race Walking Championship in 20 km and promotional events in all age groups, already boasting an excellent record of national and international registrations.

Peruvian race walker Kimberly García, the world ranking leader, along with Brazilian Érica Sena and Ecuadorian Brian Pintado, are among the notable names in the vast group of athletes who will line up at the starting line.

Kimberly García was the winner in 2017 and 2022 and repeats her presence, as does Brian Pintado, ranked sixth, who triumphed in the last two editions, and also Érica Sena, currently ranked 14th in the world ranking.

Also noteworthy are the participations of Inês Mendes from Rio Maior, as well as Vitória Oliveira and Carolina Costa, among other prominent national athletes, who are still seeking qualification for Paris 2024.

In the main competitions, 60 race walkers from 11 countries will compete. Including promotional events, a total of approximately 118 athletes will compete in the afternoon.

The press conference was attended by the Mayor of Rio Maior, Luis Filipe Santana Dias, the President of the Portuguese Athletics Federation, Jorge Vieira, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Desmor, Miguel Pacheco, former athlete Inês Henriques, and Ecuadorian coach Carlos Vela.

Also present were the Vice-Mayor of Rio Maior, Lopes Candoso, and the Councilors Miguel Santos and Carla Dias, the Technical Director of the competition, Hugo Dinis, the President of the Santarém Athletics Association, Eduardo Gonçalves, and the coach and former race director, Jorge Miguel.

"Rio Maior has been trying and succeeding in asserting itself in the country and in the world as a sports municipality. And this was the modality that became the differentiating factor," said Filipe Santana Dias. The president of the FPA emphasized that Rio Maior's investment in race walking was "a game-changer in the country and even more so in the region." Miguel Pacheco highlighted this as "one of the best editions ever" regarding the race walkers' performances.

Throughout the day, a series of activities will take place in the 25 de Abril Municipal Garden for the entire population of Rio Maior, including workshops, pilates, and many other initiatives combining sports and leisure. The technical team of the Mais Desporto, Mais Saúde Rio Maior program awaits everyone for a full day.

The event is co-organized by the Municipality of Rio Maior, Desmor, and the Rio Maior Swimming Club, with the support of the Portuguese Athletics Federation and the Santarém Athletics Association.
