The City Council of Rio Maior, the Rio Maior Sports Centre the Sports Foundation, and the Association of Olympic Athletes of Portugal (AAOP), established on December 7, at the Rio Maior Sports Centre, a cooperation protocol.
The object of this cooperation is to encourage access by AAOP members to training and sports preparation facilities owned by the municipality and managed by DESMOR.
The Mayor of Rio Maior, Luís Filipe Santana Dias, the Rio Maior Sports Centre Director, Miguel Pacheco, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sports Foundation, Paulo Frischknecht, and Luís Monteiro, President of Association of Olympic Athletes of Portugal.
Also present was Eduarda Marques, Regional Director for Lisbon and the Tagus Valley of the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ), representing the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Correia and President of the IPDJ, Vitor Pataco.
In the words uttered by the signatories of the protocol, there was a general consensus in recognizing the merit of the Olympic athletes in the legacy they leave to the country and in the inspiration they constitute for young people who see in the values of sport a path of personal and social appreciation that are fundamental for future success. of their post-career sports lives.
Rio Maior had athletes participating in the Olympic Games from Barcelona 1992 to Tokyo 2020, uninterruptedly, in a total of 23 participations through 11 athletes in 5 different sports modalities in 8 editions of the Olympic Games.
