The first Global Adapted Swimming Training Camp, sponsored by the Portuguese Swimming Federation (FPN), took place in Rio Maior from 3-5 May, exactly one year after Portugal organized the 2016 IPC Swimming European Open Championships in Funchal, which is a European swimming competition for disabled athletes.
This was the first training camp, where athletes from various disability categories were selected and trained together with non-disabled swimmers. These athletes already reached the qualification times for the main international competitions of 2017. For example, the swimmers of Belenenses, Miguel Cruz and Tiago Neves, who already obtained the qualification time for the Deaflympics 2017 in Turkey, also did their preparation in Rio Maior, guided by their coach Fernando Couto.
