KIMBERLY GARCIA AND BRIAN PINTADO WON IN RIO MAIOR

This year, the event also included the 39th Edition of the National Portugal Walking Championship, resulting in an increase in overall competitiveness with the presence of many of the best national athletes.

The International Grand Prix of Rio Maior Walking, held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, is an event that is part of the restricted group  World Race Walking Tour da World Athletics, category Gold RW Event.

In the main competitions, over 60 race walkers from 11 countries lined up. With the promotional races included, a total of about 130 athletes competed, in another edition that will go down in the history of national and international race walking.

In the international 20 km races, the winners were Kimberly Garcia from Peru and Brian Daniel Pintado from Ecuador. Each of these athletes has already won this competition three times! Completing the men's podium, in second place was César Rodriguez from Peru, and Marc Tur from Spain. The women's podium was completed with the second place of Alejandra Ortega from Mexico and Érica Sena from Brazil.

Some of these athletes practically ended up competing at home, as for several months they have chosen the Rio Maior Sports Centre as their base for preparation for major international competitions, including the Paris Olympics.

The best Portuguese athletes in the women's competition were Vitória Oliveira, followed by Inês Mendes and Carolina Costa from Rio Maior, and in the men's competition, the podium for the best Portuguese athletes went to Tiago Ramos, João Olim, and Tiago Sucena.

In the Promotion Mile race (5 km), the winner was Rio Maior native and veteran Vera Santos. It is worth noting that Vera Santos has two victories in the main competition, in the years 2010 and 2014.

In the National Walking Championship race, Vitória Oliveira and Tiago Ramos were crowned national champions in the 20 km road category. In the women's category, Inês Mendes from Rio Maior finished second with a time of 1:34.21, setting a new personal record, and was crowned national under-23 champion. The SL Benfica team won in the women's category, and ACR Senhora do Desterro in the men's category.

This year's event once again featured the entertainment of the Rio Maior Volunteer Firefighters' Fanfare, followed by a colorful flag parade representing the countries with athletes registered for the race.

Before the main races, a tribute was also held, promoted by the Olympic Athletes Committee, to former Rio Maior athlete Inês Henriques. The tribute counted with the presence of canoeist Emanuel Silva, who won a silver medal at the London Olympics.

Throughout the day, a series of activities were held in the Municipal Garden for the entire population of Rio Maior, including workshops, pilates, and many other initiatives combining physical activity and leisure. The technical team of the More Sport, More Health Rio Maior program provided the people of Rio Maior with a day full of activities.

This event was co-organized by the Municipality of Rio Maior, Rio Maior Sports Centre, and the Rio Maior Swimming Club, with the support of the Portuguese Athletics Federation and the Santarém Athletics Association.
