RIO MAIOR SPORTS CENTRE | August 2026 Activity
The month of August maintained an intense level of activity at the Rio Maior Sports Centre, with national and international training camps, competitions and sporting events, alongside a strong dynamic of summer activities. Basketball, football, swimming and modern pentathlon were among the featured sports, in a month that also marked the closing of the bathing season and another edition of Desmor Camp.
1. Training CampsIn August, the Rio Maior Sports Centre welcomed 297 athletes for training camps, representing 8 sports and coming from 10 countries.
Highlights of the month:
• The Rio Maior High Performance Centre hosted another swimming training camp from 1 to 8 August, with three athletes and their coaches from the National Pure Swimming Team, in preparation for international competitions.
• Also from 1 to 8 August, the Portugal Women's Under-16 Basketball National Team chose Rio Maior for another preparation camp. The twice-daily sessions took place at the Multi-Sports Pavilion, ahead of Portugal's participation in the European Championship, Division B, held in Luxembourg.
• The international dimension was once again present in football, with around 30 young footballers from the United Kingdom, from the David Campbell Soccer Academy, holding a training camp in Rio Maior from 3 to 15 August.
• From 19 to 23 August, the Modern Pentathlon Training and Performance Centre hosted a National Teams training camp, as part of preparations for the Under-15 and Under-19 European and World Championships.
2. EventsThe month of August was likewise marked by the holding of various events and initiatives, with particular emphasis on football, basketball and activities aimed at younger people.
• On 12 August, Rio Maior marked International Youth Day with a programme of sports and leisure activities at the Swimming Pool Complex and the Tree Adventure Park. Inflatables, a sunset party, a foam party and a DJ marked a day especially dedicated to young people.
• Liga Portugal football returned to the Rio Maior Municipal Stadium on 18 August, with Casa Pia AC hosting SL Benfica, in front of 6,437 spectators, on an afternoon of great activity and entertainment in the city. On 30 August, Casa Pia AC played in Rio Maior again, this time against Moreirense FC.
• The Portuguese and Icelandic Women's National Basketball Teams were in Rio Maior between 20 and 22 August, playing two preparation matches against each other. Portugal won both games, as part of the preparation process for the 2027 European Championship.
3. Summer SeasonAnother summer season at the Rio Maior Outdoor Swimming Pools came to an end on 30 August. Since opening on 15 June, 12,965 entries were recorded over 76 days, corresponding to an average of around 171 users per day.
Throughout the summer, the Outdoor Swimming Pools once again became a favourite destination for children, young people and families, and were also used by several institutions that included this facility in their leisure-time programmes.
Users had access to the different water areas, from the pool intended for the youngest children to the diving pool, as well as the extensive grassy areas, bar and terrace. The sandy area once again provided opportunities for beach games, such as football, volleyball and racket games.
One of the new features in 2026 was the creation of a new area with pergolas and sun loungers, providing users with an additional option for comfort and shade during rest periods, which saw good uptake throughout the season.
The Rio Maior Swimming Pool Complex is awarded the Portugal a Nadar Seguro Quality Seal by the Portuguese Swimming Federation, a certification covering all the Complex's water areas, including the Outdoor Swimming Pools, and recognising compliance with high standards of hygiene and safety.
Water quality control is a permanent priority. The implemented plan includes four monthly bacteriological analyses of all water areas, above the two legally required, carried out by a certified entity and the competent health authorities.
Desmor, E.M., S.A., certified in accordance with the international ISO 9001:2015 standard, thus maintains its commitment to high standards of quality in its processes and to the safety and well-being of all users.
In 2027, we will be back for another great bathing season!
4. Desmor CampThe summer of 2026 once again meant active holidays at Desmor Camp, which recorded 350 registrations of children and young people between the ages of 6 and 14, over eight weeks.
With the permanent support of the team of monitors, the programme provided weeks filled with diverse activities, prioritising fun, sports, socialising and the safety of all participants.
Games, swimming in the pools, cinema, cooking and plenty of sport were part of a programme designed to provide different experiences throughout the summer and create great moments among the participants.
The safety and well-being of the children and young people remained priorities throughout the entire edition, with compliance with the guidelines applicable to the organisation and operation of holiday camps.
After eight weeks, 350 registrations and many activities, another edition of Desmor Camp comes to an end.
We will be back next summer!
